41-year-old Gay Man Was Murdered and Burnt By Unknown Assailants In Jamaica

41-year-old Dean Moriah (Tourist industry)
41-yeay-old Dean Moriah, an openly gay man and entertainment coordinator of Bogue Village, Montego Bay, Jamaica body was found with stabbed wounds, his house was set on fire with his body inside and his car was stolen ,about 4 O'clock this morning.

According to the Jamaica-Gleaner News paper citing the Western Bureau stated that "renowned Monetgo Bay hospitality worker, Dean Moriah was early this morning killed at Bogue Village home in Montego Bay, burnt by unknown assailants. The police say Moriah was stabbed several times before the house was set on fire with him inside. Moriah, who worked for several years as an entertainment manager with the SupperClubs group, last worked with Margaritaville Caribbean."

Additionally, the Jamaica Observer reported that, "his Toyota Camry motor car was also stolen during the incident."

In the same parish/location in Jamaica, on July 22, 2013 16-year-old Dwayne Jones, a transgender woman was mobbed, stabbed, beaten and shot after he attended a local party. His body was found early in the morning. Since the murder of Dwayne Jones, there has been a rise in mob attacks on gays in Jamaica. Dean worked in the Tourism industry in Jamaica for almost his entire life to welcome and entertain visitors/tourists. The country and it's economy which he helps to build, killed him. Homophobia killed him! Hate killed him!

Based on the news report, unknown assailants (more that one person) stabbed Dean Moriah to death and set his house on fire with his body inside. It was alleged that Dean was killed because he was gay, due to the how the cruel act was carried out. This is barbaric and a moral obscenity. How many more gay men in Jamaica should be brutally murdered before Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller led government, stand up to the hate and murderous anti-gay culture and it's people?

How can we continue to stand and ignore the atrocities meted against our brothers? How can we continue to encourage tourists to visit Jamaica, when gay workers and citizens are not safe there?

Dean Moriah is my dear FACEBOOK friend and it saddens me to know that his life was taken by a group of people or assailants. He is my brother. Friends, co-workers and family are finding it hard to come to terms with his brutal death. Injustice towards mankind or an individual, regardless of his or her sexuality, gender, creed or sex is injustice towards all. Joins as we cry out against the inhumane treatment of the forgotten gay and lesbians people in Jamaica as well as BOYCOTT Jamaica's tourism to urge goverment to put an end to the violence towards gays and repeal its sodomy law.

We are tired of waiting! We are tired of being patient! Gay Jamaicans want their freedom and they want it now!

    1. Jay dont be fooled by this drivel the ENTIRE country KNEW Dean and he walked around FREELY ,,, from all reports this was a LOVERS' quarrel gone sour ...

    2. Thank you for putting that out there... People with their own agendas need to stop taking tragedies and use it as their flag ship in getting what they want. Over the years Jamaica has become tolerant to homosexuals and the few cases of homosexual murders aren't as clean cut as it is made out to be. Its very sad that Dean's life was taken but ppl plz stop being Judge and Jury by blaming the heterosexual community. What if after investigations it is shown that this man was killed by another homosexual what then? Will there be an apology? Let's all pray that the wave of crime is decreased and plz let us try to co-exist with each other.

    3. a transgender was killed in New York last week.Make sure to boycott the USA.

    4. @ an eke there won't be a need for any apologizes the same thing goes on they have eniff information to call it as is...we heed to boycott American land,Jamaica and anywhere else people wants take Gods job from him.I am not saying their life is right or wrong...but for sure we don't have a right to judge or kill them. # facts are facts. Here in the U.S as in Jamaica as in Trinidad there is too many crimes on homosexual because of they choose to be or what they choose to be.

Bottom line most of the areas these killings are happening is some of the poorest area and most of the people that does crimes has along rap sheet and only quotes the bible to justifiy these hate crimes.

    5. Anneke Taylor your crap statement about Jamaica being tolerant to gays is made moot by the recent killing of the tranny teen. Whether or not this was a lover's quarrel I dunno but I am more inclined to believe he was killed by anti gay people from the same parish who killed that teen last months. Such barbaric people. BOYCOTT Jamaica!

    6. We all knew and accepted Dean for who he was and no one did anything to him so, why now? I will leave any judgement until further investigation

    7. Anonymous u seem to have a serious issue with Jamaica..No straight man is gonna kill a gay person and strip then naked, we are too homophobic for that shit...This dude was killed by his lover, boycotting Jamaica wont stop gays from killing other gays. This wont get u guys legal in the country, u guys are too violent, so please control ur emotions.

    8. pleas stop the rumors about Jamaica allowed the police to do their work what are you looking for sympathy , its not good to spread bad news ' why don't you do proper investigation on the issues

    9. you lucky, we are glad you dont want to come here.

  • Thanks for alerting us Dwayne.

We have a protest in London On Wed 28 over murder of Dwayne Jones. SEE: http://bit.ly/1fgDesr

    3. gays quarrels are extremely violent? Gays are about the most peaceful people in the world. Obviously you don't know many (or perhaps you kill them first). It's sad that the culture in Jamaica is so animalistic and uneducated.

You can't tell me that Gays are simply allowed to live their lives in Jamaica:

We all know that the brother was killed by his lover, but u have grown increasingly accustomed 2 pointing the finger at Str88 people whenever a Gay person dies...........so now its; "Do not visit Jamaica because of Homophobia" Well listen, u sound Gay, so u should know that Gay people has a history of voilence nd jealousy..........as is displayed on a daily basis. This had nothing 2 do with homophobia.........just a Gay love affair gone wrong.

How is it fair that u want to force ppl to accept your way of thinking? how are u any better than the islam fundamentalists that kill ppl who view things differently?? Jamaicans dont lie homosexuality, and legalising it isnt going to make the situation any better. Stop sensationalising your bullshit and actually do ur research before you slander an entire country. WHy you dont pressure the KKK to start accepting Black people? Or the Taliban to be more respectful of of women? at the end of the day, who are the real bigots?

  • His neighbours can attest to the fact that this is a lie. From what most people are aware their was a lover's spat which ended badly. They were seen publicly arguing and neighbours heard it when they got to the house. His neighbours pulled him from the burning room. Stop spreading propaganda before researching the truth. No one harmed him even though he lived openly. He was harmed by his counterpart. Jamaica does not openly kill every person that resides among us who we think is gay. Lying to cover a inside murder will not remove the fact that it is one. Gays kill each other violently, we all know that.

Know what's going on in your own country before talking nonsense about ours...America has more homophobic people than Jamaica just by shear numbers....300 million people in America to 3 million in Jamaica......we don't bother people who don't bother us.....and considering how most Jamaicans don't like that lifestyle, no one will attack gays unless provoked or molested....Hell, that goes for any life style...what makes you so special? ..Look at your own statistics and shut up about Jamaica.
New york alone with 8. 25 million people crime rate went up 70%.U.S. Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS), "Hate Crime Victimization, 2003-2013,"
England are worse ......travel a little and get out of your box...most of the world are not as tolerant as you think and you don't hear of their racists and homophobic behaviors because they are not as open in reporting as other countries.
Research by London LGBT hate crime charity Galop shows 98 homophobic and transphobic crimes are recorded each week by police across Britain.

  • COULD THIS HAVE BEEN THE RESULT OF A JEALOUS RAGE?. It has happened before and this seems the pattern in their lovers feud. This by the way are reasons some despise the community. This must be investigated before we run all over the world and cry "hate crime". There are many known gay persons in Jamaica who live without fear. The gay community needs to influence its members to determine the precepts by which they conduct their lives so the rest of Jamaica is not blamed when they mess up.

  • This is the most ludicrous attempt at saying Jamaicans are homophobic. Any well thinking person would know that a stabbing death is usually personal, because its a crime of passion. Taking that into consideration it would be obvious that his attacker was known to him, probably his significant other that the police is now searching for and cannot find.

Should it be found out that it was his gay lover that killed him and left him for dead, will the gay community come out and say we are sorry for trying to tear down Jamaica and admit that they too are jealous, aggressive and capable of killing each other.

The truth at the end of the day is that if you feel uncomfortable where you live then you should just move. Surely if your christian neighbor decides to blast their gospel music in the wee hours of the morning and refuses to stop, then you have one of two options; move or put up with it. Its even more obvious that Dean had some good neighbor, because in the news report not one of them called him a homosexual.

Shouldn't tourists boycott Jamaica for that too? Or only gays should not be killed in Jamaica? Jamaica has been multiplying its death rate daily and domestic violence is a lead contributor to crime in Jamaica whether gay or straight. I WILL NEVER EVER SUPPORT ALLOWING MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS AND OTHER JAMAICAN TO SINK FURTHER INTO POVERTY...not know or ever ... instead of fighting fire with fire you should focus your energy on sensitizing the Jamaican public ...on understanding our Christian society ...on simply saying JAMAICAN ARE NOT REQUIRED TO ACCEPT HOMOSEXUALITY BUT THEY MUST MUST RESPECT LIFE AND PEOPLES CHOICES

  • There is a very high possibility of this being minority against minority. If whoever wrote this was a true reporter they would have highlighted that fact. Stop trying to use Jamaica's name and sentimentalization to sell your news product. When gays here kill each other in a fit of jealous rage it's as gruesome as it gets, and most times seems to be a case of terrible knifing. How many of those gay on gay crimes have you reported? It will be interesting to see if JFLAG and the UN jump on this one as well. They need to speak to the gay community they defend because they are highly provocative and disrespectful. They threaten people at will because they know they will have big lawyers placed on the case to defend them. They are not afraid to tell people they do not have to work because their a**ss will earn them more than others have to break their back to earn working at regular jobs. Did this Minority news channel get a wind of any of the news of gays attacking/fighting each other in town centers, and community people having to ask for them to be removed from their neighborhoods because of their disruptive behavior? That is after allowing them to live there for sometime and leaving them to their lifestyle. How many of those stories do you carry? Report both sides of the story or shut the hell up with your bias reports.

He was also found naked when he was pulled from the house which would suggest that he was with someone he knew and is close with. Writer why are u trying so desperately to make this sound like a hate crime? he was also able to tell the fire fighters one name and that person is being sought as we speak. I do hope the name he called isn't yours.

  • The news reported that Dean Moriah was stabbed several times by unknown assailants(more than one person), his house was set ablaze with him inside and his car was stolen. It was also alleged that he was killed for being gay, due to his openness about his sexuality...

    Facts:

    1. He was stabbed to death by more than one person (unknown assailants)
    2. Home was set on fire with body inside
    3. Victim's car was stolen.

    NB: Robbery and murder

The police theorized (lack of evidence) that Dean was killed as a resulting from a domestic quarrel. suggesting he was murdered by a single gay man. sharing the country's rhetoric that, "gays are killed only by gays in Jamaica and not because of their sexuality." The Facts and stories of victims say otherwise.

The transgender woman was at a straight party under the guise of a being a naturally born woman and made a fool of the man he was gyrating on allegedly. The entertainment coordinator was dating a married man who refused to come out of the closet and he threathened to expose him allegedly. Jamaicans dont kill gays we just cannot accept their lifestyle but we tolerate it. Today gays are in most workplaces and/or communities.

Regardless, Dean was an openly gay man. In light of Jamaica's horrific buggery laws and the majority of our citizen’s negative attitude towards the LGBT community (let's not pretend otherwise!), surely any reasonable person can understand why there is concern. I do not want anyone boycotting Jamaica, but I too do not want Dean's death to be in vain. Hopefully Dean's murder will open up transformative dialogue/policy change about tolerance and respect for those who are not like you. Are we not "Out of Many, One People"?

For all of the times that the lifestyle he chose was known. You only serve to insult a man on ice. Shame on you for using Dean's death for this purpose. • Dean Brown please stop spreading LIES! We are not attacking gays in Jamaica! We are one of the most "tolerant" anti-gay countries in the world. Remember I used the term "anti-gay" I walk around in the capital of Kingston where we see them everyday. They go to the same salons as any female in Jamaica. Unu need fi stop the foolishness!!! We not targeting gays, if that was the case we would have killed off almost half the population as a number of our citizens are either full fledged gays or bi-sexuals. It is unfortunate that Dean was murdered - it's really a crying shame. But in a number of these cases they are usually "crime of passion" or the villians are usually from within the "gay community"

It was wrong for them to brutally murder the young "cross-dresser" but he gambled and loss. Our culture is not readily receptive to persons who try to decieve others in that fashion. His decision was not necessarily smart as he went to a "regular" party to dance with "regular" men under the desguise as a "regular" woman. It was deceptive and foolish! I repeat - they were cruel and wrong to have killed him. It was wrong! But his decision was not a smart one.

We are not in the business of killing members of the "gay community" as many of us have at least one member of the family that is gay. So stop telling lies! Stop!
